Frequently Asked Questions
The StrikeMaster FAQ is divided into different sections for your convenience. Please click on a title below to reveal more information related to that topic.
1. Power Auger FAQ
Question: How do I start my Solo power auger?
Answer:
- Turn ON/OFF switch to ON.
- Prime engine 5 to 8 times.
- Slide the choke lever to start.
- Press the decompression button in. Gently and slowly pull recoil rope until resistance is felt, then finish the pull with a short, quick pull.
Note: it is VERY important to find that resistance before pulling cord. That engages all the components properly. This decompression and resistance check must be done before every pull.
Once you hear the engine fire, slide the choke lever to run. Continue the pulling Procedure until engine starts.
Question: Can I use synthetic oils in my Solo auger?
Answer:
Quality two cycle oils (Regular or Synthetic) are approved for use in the Solo engine.
Mixture ratio MUST NOT exceed 50:1
Mixture ratios over 50:1 will VOID all warranties.
StrikeMaster 2 cycle oil meets OEM approved global oil specifications ISO-E-GD and API TC for use in all 2 cycle air cooled engines. Approved for Solo and Tecumseh engines.
Solo 2 cycle oil meets OEM approved global oil specifications ISO-L-EGD, JASO FD for use in all 2 cycle air cooled engines.
Question: What type of oil can I use in the Strike-Lite?
Answer:
Any quality low-temp synthetic 4-stroke oil or conventional 5W-30. Fill oil only to the bottom level on the dip stick.
Question: What is the fuel/oil ratio for a 2-cycle engine?
Answer:
The Fuel/oil ratio should be 40:1 (3.2 oz oil to one gallon gas) using a standard two cycle engine oil. We also recommend using a low-smoke 2 cycle oil. DO NOT USE ETHANOL. For best engine performance make sure to use winter formulated premium unleaded gasoline-91 or highter Octane (usually available November-April depending upon manufacturers).
DO NOT USE WHITE GAS. DO NOT USE A MULTI-VISCOSITY OIL. Recommended brands of oil: StrikeMaster’s Low Smoke, Two-Stroke Oil or any brand name, air-cooled, tw cycle engine oil such as Tecumseh, Homelite, Steele, etc. (mix oil to StrikeMaster’s specifications, not the oil manufacturer’s.
Question: What spark plug should be used for my 2-cycle engine and what is the gap?
Answer:
On 2 HP Tecumseh models (i.e. TC-300 or TMO40XA model engines), use a Champion CJ6Y, but you may use a Champion CJ8Y. The CJ8Y sparks hotter which burns the gasoline more effeciently, since gasoline varies in quality. For 3 HP Tecumseh engines use the J17LM plug. Solo engines use a Bosch WSR6F or Champion RCJ-6Y. Robin engines use a NGK CMR6A.
The gap on the spark plug should be at .030 for the Tecumseh and Solo engine. If replacing the spark plug with a Bosch brand plug, the gap should be .019 for the Solo Engine.
Question: What is the black stuff running out of the muffler on my 2HP auger?
Answer:
2-cycle engines require mixing 2-cycle oil with unleaded fuel (in the fuel can before filing the tank on the auger). Some of the oil does not always burn off entirely and will secrete out the muffler. If you are noticing that there is excessive oil secretions from your muffler or that the spark plug is getting "gummed up", the fuel /oil mixture is most likely mixed too rich (too much oil). Add 1-2 oz. of unleaded gas to lean out mixture (do not add directly to your auger's fuel tank). Make sure to use winter formulated unleaded gasoline for best engine performance.
Question: What is the difference between the Lazer power augers and the Magnum or Mag 2000?
Answer:
The main difference lies in the drill unit. The Lazer drill will shave the ice which produces a smoother, faster operation. The Lazer can drill a hole in two feet of ice in 10 to 15 seconds. The Mag 2000 has more of a traditional style of chipping the ice.
Question: Will a jiffy drill fit the StrikeMaster powerhead?
Answer:
No. The Jiffy Drill turns counter clockwise.
Question: Will the Lazer drill unit fit the Mag powerhead?
Answer:
Yes, all StrikeMaster drills are interchangeable with StrikeMaster Powerheads.
Question: What size is the collar bolt?
Answer:
8 mm x 1.25, 30 mm long. It can be purchased through our online store by clicking here.
Question: What kind of power source can be used and how many holes can be drilled with the power source for the Electra Lazer DP Auger?
Answer:
Any 12 volt power source can be used, ie. Motorcycle, garden tractor, car, marine, deep cycle, etc. On a fully charged battery source, the Electra Lazer can drill between 15-40 holes (in average ice depth of 2 feet). Charge battery after each use.

3. Blades FAQ
Question: Will the Lazer hand auger blades fit on the Mora hand auger?
Answer:
No.
Question: How do I sharpen my auger blades?
Answer:
First of all, remember that the auger blades are very sharp and should be treated as a fine cutting instrument. StrikeMaster Mora hand auger blades should only be sharpened on the top edge that does not come in direct contact with the ice. Do not sharpen the bottom edge of the blade or the blades will not cut. Lazer Blades can be touched up, but not sharpened to their original edge.
